In his first book, Dreams From My Father, Obama admitted to using cocaine, among other drugs. Shaheen claims he was bringing up the drug use because the GOP will do the same, and that the democrats would do better to nominate someone whose past has already been vetted. His questions about Obama were really what the GOP would say, he claims.

Moderate. I cannot recall any white candidate whose past drug use was used to imply that he was an actual drug dealer. Given the prevailing image of drug dealing as a "black thing," Shaheen went too far.

High. While it's true that candidates must show they are tough and can handle the general campaign, using hypothetical attacks as an excuse to attack your own party's candidate just seems weak.

The L.A. Times wanted to know if Obama's victory in Iowa had quelled doubts of Black voters.
Taylor Marsh circulates a rumor from the New York Post's gossip section Page Six, that the on night of Obama's Iowa win, he attended a victory party that played Jay-Z's "99 Problems." In the song, Jay raps, "I got 99 problems but a bitch ain't one." Listeners took it as a sly reference to Clinton. (Note: the New York Post is owned by conservative media magnate and Hillary supporter Rupert Murdoch.)
She states that since the Obama campaign did not demand a retraction of the Page Six column, then it must be true.

The unintended byproduct, to the dismay of Democratic loyalists, disturbs the party's racial chemistry. An assault on the qualifications of Obama, the first African-American with a chance to be elected president, could menace Democratic reliance on overwhelming support for the party's white candidates from black voters. The sudden outbreak of racial conflict in Democratic affairs, which results solely from Clinton's strategy against Obama and has nothing to do with race as such, arouses deep apprehension inside the party.

But here's the rub. Johnson was forced to apologize to Obama for his real, imagined, or likely manufactured slight. Yet as of this writing there's no sign of any like apology from the Obama camp for distorting and then blowing up Clinton's King compliment. His much touted agreement with Hillary to tone down the race attacks is not the same as an apology. Don't bet that that "truce" will last."
